Welcome back to Fairy Land! If you're like me, you see a "finished" bottle of lotion or an empty cereal box and don't see trash—yep, you see a mid-century modern armchair or a chic farmhouse dining table.
Today, we’re going to build a high-end DIY Dollhouse "Velvet" Sofa using items you definitely have in your recycling bin right now. This project is the perfect way to reduce waste while leveling up your doll’s living room.
DIY Dollhouse Furniture: The Upcycled "Velvet" Sofa (1:12 Scale)
By your resident DIY Dollhouse Fairy
Whether you are a seasoned miniaturist or a beginner looking for easy dollhouse crafts, this project is the perfect way to reduce waste and level up your doll’s living room.
Materials You’ll Need:
The Frame: One empty cardboard box (tea boxes or granola bar boxes work best).
The Padding: A clean kitchen sponge or scrap bubble wrap.
The Fabric: An old shirt, a stray sock, or even heavy-duty felt.
The Legs: 4 large wooden beads or painted toothpaste caps.
Tools: Hot glue gun, sharp fabric scissors, and a ruler.
Step 1: Design the Base
Cut your cardboard box into three main sections: the seat (a rectangle roughly 6" x 2.5"), the backrest (6" x 3"), and two armrests (2.5" x 2").
Tip: Use a 1:12 scale ruler to ensure your sofa doesn't end up looking like a giant throne for your 6-inch dolls!
Step 2: Add the "Cushion"
Glue your sponge or bubble wrap to the top of the seat and the front of the backrest. This gives the sofa that "plump," expensive look without the high-end price tag.
Step 3: The Upholstery
Lay your fabric face down. Place your padded cardboard pieces onto the fabric. Wrap the edges tightly—like you're wrapping a gift—and secure them with hot glue on the back.

Step 4: Assembly
Glue the backrest to the seat at a slight angle. Then, attach the armrests to the sides. Hold each piece for 30 seconds to ensure the glue sets firmly.
Step 5: Give it Some Height
Flip the sofa over and glue your four beads/caps to the corners.
